Dr. Pawan Vasudeva

A good doctor is approachable, confident, decisive, intelligent, interested, compassionate and caring, being able to absorb patient’s pain and anxieties without losing focus, treating patients as humans rather than a symptom. Dr. Pawan Vasudeva is one such doctor, who embodies in himself all such qualities. Putting patients at ease and making a difference in their lives are his other attributes. His patients are mostly senior citizens, in their twilight years. No wonder, patients left behind by celebrated former urological oncologist, head of the department-cum-professor of urology, Dr. N.K.Mohanty, following his retirement in January 2013, were taken over by him. Dr. Vasudeva is an Associate Professor, Urology, Vardhman Mahaveer Medical College and a leading consulting urological oncologist in the prestigious Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.

Born in 1977, Dr. Pawan is highly accomplished urologist both academically and clinically. He did his MBBS in 2001 from Indira Gandhi Medical College, Himachal Pradesh University, followed by MS (General Surgery) in 2005, MRCS, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in 2006, M.Ch (Urology), CSMMU (formerly King George Medical College University, Lucknow), six month long clinical training in Renal Transplant in AIIMS, New Delhi, Fellowship in Neuro-urology and Female Urology in 2012 at University Hospital, Innsbruck, Austria, under European Scholarship Programme, Clinical Training at Neuro-urology Unit of Spinal Cord Injury Centre, Bal grist University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland in 2012 and a weeklong clinical visit to Pediatric Neuro-urology Division at Krankenhaus der, Barmherzigen Swestem, Linz, Austria in 2012.

His other accomplishments are innumerable prizes and awards including Best Paper Prize for Photo selective Vaporisation of Prostrate Vs. Transurethral Resection of Prostrate:  A prospective randomized study with a year long follow up in 2013. He has 34 professional articles published in Indexed Journals to his credit, including 21 in international peer reviewed journals. Besides, 28 abstracts published, numerous Poster and Podium presentations in international and national conferences are some other achievements.

One and only Indian doctor trained in Neuro Urology, under a Fellowship awarded by European Urology Association in Austria under one of the pioneers of Neuro Urology, Prof. Helmut Madershacher, Dr. Pawan treats this sub-speciality of Urology with panache and aplomb. Neuro Urology deals with patients, who develop urinary problems following neurological diseases that occur after a stroke, spinal cord injury, parkinsonian and related impairments. It also includes looking after pediatric patients with neurological diseases like myeloemeningocole. Dr. Pawan has been providing undivided care and treatment to such patients every Monday afternoon. It is learnt officially from the Government sources that there are hardly any medical centres or doctors in the country with the knowledge, dedication and inclinations to treat such patients.

Treating patients with prostrate cancer is his other important professional area. In this connection, it would be germane to state that at the OPD counters of the Safdarjung Hospitals, urological patients overwhelmingly demand to be consulted by Dr. Pawan as is borne out from the hospital administration, and receptionists at the counter do oblige them within the permissible limits, showing his rising popularity.

Dr. Pawan’s patients enjoy high satisfaction. This was revealed to this correspondent, while interacting with a group of them. They maintain that with Dr. Pawan, their anxiety level goes down so much so that they develop a new zest for life with a renewed vigour and hopefulness. True to the Hippocratic oath, Dr. Pawan’s patients appear to be a happy lot with the consideration, compassion and benevolence shown to them.

In his 30s, Dr. Pawan promises to be an excellent all rounder urological oncologist in the making, who one-day would outshine and bring glory to the nation. Having been in the public hospital of repute, given his dedication, hard work, growing rich experiences, he has potential to outclass competition in the private sector that is solely guided by crass commercialism!
